This summer Aloïse will be celebrated by Lausanne, the city of her birth. The Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts and the Collection de l'Art Brut will exhibit the work of this inspired artist in concomitance with the publication of the critical catalogue of her work.
Institutionalized for schizophrenia in 1918, Aloïse was 32 when she cut her ties with her past. Formerly a clothes designer needlewoman, a children's governess at the court of Potsdam and an antimilitarist, she withdrew from the world, enclosing her vast biblical, literary (bookish?) and musical culture within herself. Her psychotic delirium gradually became structured around her writing and design her drawings. Her vast creative output, produced over a period of more than 40 years, took a form similar to a richly coloured covering on increasingly large supports, from the size of a page from an exercise book to paper rolls several metres in length.
